Reasons Why
Not Your "Regular" Cancer Book
This book is not just a regular cancer book. It is not one of those cancer books where you feel sorry for the person going through there diagnosis. Instead, it is very humorous like the quote Hazel says. ""I didn't tell him that the diagnosis came three months after I got my first period. Like: Congratulations! You're a woman. Now die." This is just one example how the book is more upbeat and funny. Hazel and Augustus are always exchanging witty comments to each other like, "Okay. Name some things that you never see in Indianapolis. "Um I. Skinny adults," I said." (85) John Green does wonders with keeping this book not like a "regular" cancer book.
There is Romance
Along with the Hazel and Gus's humorous remarks there is also love for each other under all that. From the beginning, Gus has his eyes on Hazel. It does not take long for him to use his charm to sweep her off her feet. This romance is a little different though. There is this deep understanding they have for each other that is just unexplainable. Gus is also a quite a sucker for romance. For example, "Now I am not going to give you my wish or anything. But I also have the interest of meeting Peter Van Houten, and it wouldn't make sense to meet him without the girl who introduced me to his book." (89) He basically gives his "Make a Wish" to Hazel so she can experience her biggest dream. This book will have you falling in love with couple as Hazel and Gus are falling in love.
