Hazel Grace Lancaster
Hazel Grace Lancaster is a 16 year old girl with cancer. Even though, she has cancer; she does not let it define who she is. Hazel knows that she has to wheel an oxygen tank around to constantly help her with her cancer, but she does not drown herself in self pity at all, and instead has a humorous outlook on her cancer. For example, "I didn't tell him that the diagnosis came three months after I got my first period. Like: Congratulations! You're a woman. Now die." (2.13) This shows how she makes little jokes about her cancer sometimes. Hazel has a good friend, Kaitlyn, but her best friends she considers are her parents. She had to leave High School early, but Hazel now attends a local community college. Hazel always is drowning herself in new books, but her favorite is, An Imperial Affection. She is constantly talking about how much she loves the book and how the author is such a genius. Hazel is also a very hip and sophisticated person. She has the short hair and does not really care what others think of her. She knows what she likes, and will do what ever she wants.
Augustus Waters
Augustus Waters or Gus is a 17 year old boy with a lot of charm, and one real leg. He had cancer and now is clear, but with only one leg now. Gus has the looks and confidence that draws Hazel in the moment she lays eyes on him. Augustus has this fear of not being remembered. So he likes to leave is mark on everyone he meets and everywhere he goes. He makes things happen, and does not waste anytime. Like with getting to know Hazel, "Augustus half smiled. "Because you're beautiful. I enjoy looking at beautiful people and I decided a while ago not to en myself the simpler pleasures of existence." (16) Gus was staring at Hazel the whole time, and did not waste anytime going up to talk to her. Also, Augustus has a pack of cigarettes. He does not really smoke them. It is a metaphor to him because he puts something that causes cancer, but it does not harm him unless he lights it. Which he never does.
Peter Van Houten
Peter Van Houten is the author of An Imperial Affection. He is Hazel's idol, and eventually becomes Gus's too. Hazel and Gus think he is some sort of genius and God of literature. That changes when they meet him though. He turns out to be a huge jerk who drinks a lot. Peter says some really mean things to Hazel like , "Sick children inevitably become arrested; You are fated to live out your days as the child you were when diagnosed. the child who believes there is life after novels." (192) Peter is a drunk and very rude to the point Hazel and Gus just leave. When they visited him, it reminded him of his painful past and how Hazel reminded him of someone he lost long ago. That is something Peter hides behind ever mean comment he makes and ever drink he has.
