Quotes from The Fault in Our Stars
“Maybe 'okay' will be our 'always”-John Green
This quote may seem very insignificant, but it is very significant. In the beginning of the book, Issac, Gus's best friend, is making out with this girl. They keep saying "always" to each other. That is like "their" phrase. One time Hazel replies "Okay" and the Gus does the same thing. So it became "their word. Whenever they text or see each other they say, "Okay." It is almost how they say "I love you" to each other. So it becomes a continued phrase Gus and Hazel use all the time just like the word always Issac used.
“That's the thing about pain...it demands to be felt.” (63) -John Green
When Gus is saying this quote, he is talking to his friend Issac who just had his hear broken and has become blind forever. Issac is so mad at everything he starts breaking anything he can find. When Gus says this quote, I think it's more than just to comfort Issac. He personally has have to deal with a lot of pain himself. So he knows how it feels to want to not feel the pain at all, but it just will not go away. Which comes to play eventually in the book.
“As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.” (125)-John Green
This is a defining moment for Hazel. She finally learns how to let her guard down and fall for someone. Before meeting Gus, she does not want to get close to a lot of people because she is afraid of hurting them. Sometimes she even resents her parents. She finally opens up though and does fall for a guy. This was the start of something that changed her life forever. Gus changed her in so many ways possible. He also became her first love.
“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.” (33) -John Green
This quote is relates to Hazel and the reader a lot actually. In The Fault in Our Stars, Hazel is constantly reading the Imperial Affection by Peter Van Houten. When she says this quote, it perfectly describes how she feels about this book. It is the book that inspires her all the time. Also, a book that defines who she is as a person because of how much she reads it. Even when she shared Augustus this book., it was like showing a deep place in her heart. This quote can also relate to the reader of The Fault in Our Stars because that is how I felt after I read this book. It is something too amazing and I just felt like the whole world around me was missing out on something spectacular.
"Grief does not change you, Hazel. It reveals you." (286) -John Green
This quote becomes very significant to Hazel. She has to deal with some really tough stuff that will give her a lot of grief. Gus is right though that grief does not change you. It reveals the person you are underneath, and how strong you either are or not. Hazel eventually figures how grief reveals her self as person. It shows how strong she truly is as a person.
